Honoring Tradition Through Adaptation- Mono de Calenda Puppet
Adapting an art form does not mean erasing its roots. Crafting a mini mono de calenda in a cross-cultural context serves as a cultural bridge. By replacing hard-to-find regional materials with accessible, everyday items, the joyful, celebratory essence of Oaxacan street art is opened up to a new audience.
It proves that you don’t need a massive workshop or specialized regional imports to capture the magic of a festival. Sometimes, all it takes is a little cardboard, some vibrant yarn, and the desire to make something dance.
Fragile Nature, Durable Trash - 2026
My approach to assemblage stages a miniature world in a simulated ecosystem in which organic life fades, but synthetic waste endures. This assemblage piece contrasts the delicate, fleeting beauty of withered roses with the stubborn permanence of single-use plastic. The cycle of life is interrupted by the permanence of human consumption. While the organic elements decompose naturally, the plastic container and figurines remain unchanged — trapping wildlife in an artificial, everlasting habitat. A world where real nature wilts under the weight of indestructible trash.
